One of the founding members of the Korean Avant-Garde Association, Ha Chong-Hyun began his seminal Conjunction series in 1974. Rather than paint directly onto the front of the canvas, Ha applies paint to the reverse and pushes it to the front surface so that the pigment seeps through the porous woven hemp cloth. This trademark process is referred to as ‘bae-ap-bub’ which translate into ‘back pressure method’. Today, Ha Chong-Hyun’s work is displayed in prominent collections worldwide and continues to be the focus of major retrospectives and solo exhibitions spanning Asia, Europe and USA.
Five decades of maturation in a refill American Oak barrel have conferred depth and richness, whilst allowing Ladyburn distillery’s signature character and style to shine through. Initial delicate citrus and floral notes give way to a sweet and creamy harmony on the palate and a lasting oak finish.
Five decades of maturation in a refill American Oak barrel have resulted in a complex harmony of flavours. Ladyburn distillery signature style and character is immediately evident through notes of linseed oil and polished leather, followed by waves of rich dessert sweetness that persist through the whisky lingering sweet finish.
The 1970s was an era of radical transformation in single malts. Ladyburn Distillery was at the centre of this shift. The very last few casks of Ladyburn were laid in this decade, before the distillery closed forever in 1975, leaving a lasting legacy through technological advances and its very rare maturing casks.
In parallel, the 1970s were also pivotal in Ha Chong-Hyun’s work, as the artist began his seminal Conjunction series in 1974. The eleven works selected for the limited release of Ladyburn Cask 3219 and 3216 have been curated to demonstrate the long-standing fifty-year legacy of pushing boundaries in both whisky-making and in Ha’s artistic practice.
“Ladyburn is a piece of history. It’s one of those distilleries, it came and it went, but the legacy lives on.
The recent collections of Ladyburn are fascinating and this new Edition is
matured in American Oak. The distillery character shines through and you get a
little bit more of that Ladyburn DNA because the cask itself is not dominating.”
